Revitalize Your Look with Eyelid Surgery | Nashville, TN | Dr. Cash

Eyelid surgery can correct drooping, puffy, or baggy eyelids that can make you look older and tired, even when you feel young and energetic. Drooping eyelids can also interfere with your vision. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, removes excess skin and unwanted fat deposits to lift sagging eyelids and eliminate puffiness, restoring a youthful and alert appearance to your face.

To learn how eyelid surgery might benefit you, contact Nashville Plastic Surgery today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Michael Cash. Dr. Cash is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has extensive experience in performing complex reconstructive surgery and customized cosmetic procedures.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the upper or lower eyelids. As you age, your facial skin gradually stretches and loses elasticity, causing it to droop. Fat can also shift downward, accumulating in unwanted pockets. When this occurs in your eyelids, it can make you look sleepy and older. A drooping upper eyelid can also limit your range of vision. Eyelid surgery corrects these problems by tightening and lifting the skin of the eyelids and removing unwanted fat.

Why Consider Eyelid Surgery?

You might consider eyelid surgery if you’re bothered by the sagging or drooping appearance of your eyelids, or by puffy bags under your eyes.

Eyelid surgery can:

  • Correct droopy eyelids
  • Lighten heavy upper eyelids
  • Reduce puffiness around the eyes
  • Eliminate chronic bags under the eyes
  • Allow you to fully open your eyelids
  • Change the “at rest” position of the eyelids to appear more alert and engaged
  • Give the eyes a brighter, more energetic look
  • Correct vision impairment caused by droopy eyelids

Who Is a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery candidates in Nashville, TN are patients bothered by signs of aging impacting the appearance of the eyes, including droopy eyelids, puffiness, or bags under the eyes. These candidates are seeking long-lasting facial rejuvenation results for a more youthful appearance.

Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty are:

  • Adults in good overall health with no medical conditions that impair healing
  • Non-smokers, or are willing to quit at least 4 weeks before and after surgery
  • Individuals with realistic expectations and a positive outlook

How Is Eyelid Surgery Completed?

Eyelid surgery is performed under general anesthesia or with local anesthesia with sedation. Dr. Cash makes small incisions within the natural folds of the eyelids. He then removes excess skin and fat to raise the eyelids, eliminate puffiness and bags, and if needed, reduce the weight of the upper eyelid.

Eyelid surgery typically takes about half an hour per eyelid.

What to Expect in Recovery

After eyelid surgery, you may experience some tenderness around your eyes in the first day or two, which can be relieved with pain medication. You can expect some swelling and bruising that lasts a few days to a few weeks. Once sutures have been removed and the incisions have healed, residual bruising can be concealed with makeup.

Dr. Cash will provide detailed instructions for self-care during recovery, when to see him for follow-up appointments, and how to reach him with any concerns. He generally recommends patients rest at home for a week to ten days before returning to work or resuming your normal activities.

After eyelid lift surgery, you may experience light sensitivity, blurred vision, or frequent tearing that typically resolves after a month.

For 4 to 6 weeks after eyelid surgery, it’s important to avoid activities that increase your blood pressure. Light walking is encouraged as soon as Dr. Cash clears you.

Other activities patients should avoid include:

  • Showering for 48 hours
  • Watching television or reading for 2 to 3 days
  • Wearing contact lenses until the incisions are completely healed

Bending at the waist for at least 5 days
