Planning Your Breast Reduction

Your breast reduction procedure at Nashville Plastic Surgery starts with a consultation with Dr. Cash. He will examine you, ask questions to learn your medical history and understand your goals for the procedure, listen to your concerns, and answer your questions.

When he has a full understanding of your wishes, he will recommend a surgical approach that will give you the results you want with the least risk. He will describe what the procedure entails, its risks and cost, and what you can expect in recovery as you heal from the surgery.

Dr. Cash’s goal in every cosmetic procedure is to produce the most attractive and natural-looking results with the least discomfort and lowest level of risk for the patient.

What Does Breast Reduction Surgery Involve?

Breast reduction surgery takes place while patients are under general anesthesia. Dr. Cash will make incisions following the plan discussed in your initial consultation. That’s typically in a circle around the areola, a line down to the center of the crease below your breast, and along the curved crease below your breast. Dr. Cash will then remove excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of and reshape the breast. He may reposition the nipple and areola to be higher on the breast. In some cases, he may use liposuction to remove additional fat. Dr. Cash will use internal sutures to support the breast in its new shape and fine stitches, adhesive, or surgical tape to close the skin.

Breast reduction surgery usually takes two to four hours. You can go home when the anesthesia has worn off, and you are fully alert. You’ll need a friend or family member to drive you and stay with you for the first night.

What to Expect in Recovery

You’ll need some time for rest and recovery at home after your surgery and should plan to take a week off from work—longer if your job involves physical exertion. You may experience some discomfort in the first few days, which you can manage with pain medication. You may also have some swelling and bruising in your breasts, which will gradually resolve as your tissue heals.

Dr. Cash will provide you with detailed instructions on how to take care of yourself as you recover, when to see him for follow-up appointments, and how to reach him with any concerns. You can resume low-impact activities and exercise after about two weeks, gradually building up to your typical activity level by about six weeks after surgery.

Breast Reduction FAQs

Dr. Cash will consult with you to determine your ideal breast size and explain what changes are possible for optimal results with minimal risk. Breast reduction surgery may reduce the breast by about two to three bra sizes.

Depending on the extent of your breast reduction and the technique used to reposition your nipples, you may or may not be able to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery. If concerns you, be sure to discuss it in your consultation with Dr. Cash.

Yes, but the scars will be naturally concealed in the edges of your areolas and by the contours of your breasts and are placed where they will be covered by clothing. The scars will be most noticeable for the first few months, after which they gradually fade to match the color of your skin.

Breast reduction surgery may be covered by your insurance. The cost to you will depend on your insurance carrier and your deductible.  If you do not qualify to have this operation under insurance, it can be performed as a cosmetic operation which will give you more control over the desired outcome and size.   There are specific requirements to have a breast reduction covered by insurance and Dr. Cash will discuss these at your consultation. The costs for your breast reduction will depend on the procedure used and where the operation is performed. We will explain the costs clearly and answer any questions you may have. We want all of our patients to be fully informed before they choose to have cosmetic surgery.

In addition to breast reduction surgery, Dr. Cash is also an expert in breast augmentation and breast lift surgery. Follow the links to learn more about each of these procedures, or schedule a consultation to see which option would be most suitable for you.
